How to Choose the Right Home Caregiver for an Aging Parent Caregiving Tips

Where to start

Hiring a home caregiver is one of the most personal decisions a family makes in South Florida. Before any agency interview, sit down and write a one-page profile of your loved one’s day. What do mornings look like? Which medications are time-critical? Where do they need a hand, and where do they prefer to be left alone?

That single page becomes the most useful screening tool you have. It turns vague questions like “is this person a good fit” into specific ones — does this caregiver know how to set up a medication reminder schedule? Have they cared for someone with early-stage dementia? Are they comfortable cooking meals to dietary restrictions?

Questions to ask in the interview

  • What hours are you typically available, and how do you handle last-minute schedule changes?
  • Tell me about a difficult moment with a previous client and how you handled it.
  • How do you communicate with family members?
  • What’s your approach when a senior resists help?

Warning signs

Be cautious of anyone who can’t give specific examples from prior care experience, who pushes back on background-check requirements, or who is reluctant to involve other family members in the conversation. The right caregiver welcomes oversight — it makes everyone’s job easier.

Boca Raton families: what we see

Most of the families we work with start with 4–6 hours per day, three days a week, and increase as trust is established. That gradual ramp gives both the senior and the caregiver time to adjust without locking anyone into a contract that doesn’t fit.
